Introduction to E-Mail

What we're going to do today:

  • We'll go over the basics of what e-mail is and how it works.
  • You'll make an e-mail account on Yahoo Mail (a free Web-based service.)
  • You'll send and receive messages.
  • You won't do everything, but you'll have the basics down.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is E-mail?
From Netlingo.com : E-mail is quite simply, electronically transmitted mail on your computer. As opposed to "snail mail," e-mail sends your messages instantaneously anywhere in the world. It is the most popular use of the Internet because of the capability to send messages at anytime, to anyone, for less money than it would cost to mail a letter or call someone on the telephone.
  • Who can use it?
Anyone who has access to the Internet.
  • What's its cost?
To send and receive messages it doesn't cost anything (read: free). The only cost associated is the cost of your Internet connection.
  • What does an e-mail address look like?
E-mail addresses all have three common parts: username + @ + computername. For example, steve367@yahoo.com is my e-mail address. steve367 is my username, @ is the separator, and yahoo.com is the name of the computer that handles my mail.
  • What can my username be?
You can have whatever you want as a username provided no one who is using that e-mail system already has it. For example, I wanted to use sgarwood, but there is a Sam Garwood who already picked the address so I had to go with another option - hence steve367. One tip - keep it easy so others don't have to type in anything difficult. Also remember, a username will NEVER have a space in it. You'll never see Steve Garwood@yahoo.com

    Yahoo Mail:

  • Why are we going to use Yahoo Mail?
It's free, dependable and you get access to other services after registering.
  • After I make my account, etc. how do I go back to check and send mail?
After you make an account you simply go back to http://mail.yahoo.com and log-in with the username and password you made (HINT: Do NOT forget your username and password.)

    Ok, let's go to Yahoo
